| Chardonnay is widely considered to be the greatest of the white wine grapes. That statement may be cause debate especially with the lovers of the great Rieslings from Germany, Sauternes from Bordeaux, or Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand. Chardonnay is one of the 3 great varietals, along with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that is planted in almost every vinicultural area, Africa,Australia, North and South America, and Europe. It is the white grape of Burgundy. Over 95% of the white grapes grown in Burgundy is actually Chardonnay , although it is usually not labeled as such. Chardonnay seems to excel in California where it is largely planted in both Napa and Sonoma Counties. Although many differnet styles of Chardonnay are produced, the classic example will conjure sensations of toasty oak, buttery richness, and tropical fruit. |
